Episode #45: Money Part 1: Why You Have It and Why You Don't

I'm a first generation Latina, daughter of immigrants, and I never believed wealth was for me.

Why?

Because I was raised in a house with the following values around money:

  • The only way to make money was to work hard
  • Women don't talk about money because it's rude and impolite to talk about money
  • Being humble and serving others is more important than money

I've always been 100% committed to serving my community so I never thought I'd have money. I didn't talk about money because I didn't want to be rude (and un-lady-like), and I was working my butt off (lots of long hours and trading time for money) because that's how I learned to make money.

Then, I got coaching. I started to examine my thoughts and thought errors around money. And, I slowly started to disprove them.

Turns out money and wealth is for me, and for every other women out there who wants it. Turns out I can be of equal or more service to my community when I have the money to fund the free clinic, instead of just volunteering there, and it turns out being humble and in-service does not exclude having money.

Now, I'm creating generational wealth for my family, I've invested my money so it's working for me when I sleep, and I'm still 100% committed and in service to my community. I'm both still directly in service working as a community doctor and mentor to underrepresented students, AND, we're able to be in service by directly donating money to help fund causes that are changing this world.

Guess what made all that possible?

Me believing that money was for me.

Me not being afraid to make it or invest it.

Me trusting that money wouldn't change my values.

I share all this with you because money is one of the most charged topics in our society. As women being raised in the patriarchy, there have been oppressive and institutionalized (laws) barriers to learning about and having money. And, it's created both the gender pay gap and equally important the confidence money gap.

This is the first in a 5 part series on money. So, get ready to clean up your thoughts and learn so much more about money. By listening and learning more about money your closing the confidence money gap, and you're helping dismantle the patriarchy.
